Cell-Cell Interaction Studies in Reproduction and Cancer

Our research team studies the molecular basis of the mechanisms involved in intercellular adhesion as well as the events of intra- and intercellular signaling that are triggered as a result of cell-cell interactions in physiological and pathological processes. For more than 20 years, team members have studied various molecular processes that underlie such important pathologies as infertility and cancer. Our interest is to identify specific, sensitive and reproducible molecular markers known as biomarkers. We believe that our investigations are contributing to the innovative model of Personalized and Precision Medicine. This new approach to human and animal medicine proposes the use of diagnostic and treatment approaches adjusted to the individual genetic characteristics of each patient and the disease, as well as to the patient's environmental conditions and lifestyle, based on the use of biomarkers. Its use will increase the efficiency in the management of the patients, avoiding delays and complications that compromise the quality of life of the individuals.

For the translational research projects we carry out, we combine bioinformatics, cellular, molecular and functional biology strategies, using cellular models, experimental animals and samples from patients affected by various pathologies. We are investigating molecular aspects related to male and female infertility and to solid tumors of epithelial origin that affect both women (ovary, endometrium) and men (prostate) and both (breast and bladder).

We work closely to national and medical experts, among them teams from the Hospital Italiano and Hospital Britanico from Buenos Aires and from the Hospital Vall d´Hebron from Barcelona, Spain. Our expertise led us to initiate in recent years a set of collaborations with colleagues in our country for the development of biosimilars using innovative strategies worldwide to generate genetically modified animals as bioreactors, which can be used in the development of biopharmaceuticals for human and animal use.

We have recently launched a high level services platform (STAN) of CONICET called BIMOVA (Biomarkers, Models and Validations, bimova2018@gmail.com). BIMOVA offers several services:

-assessment of the current state of the art in the project / idea of interest toward human and animal health technology development or implementation

-bioinformatic studies of text and data mining for the identification and tracking of biomarkers of diagnosis, treatment and targets for the development of new drugs,

-implementation of models and validation of biomarkers.

-technical staff training, as well as survey advice and optimization of spaces and tests optimization/implementation.
